Camberwell, Your Local Area
Camberwell is a suburb of Melbourne. A feature sight of Camberwell is the Burke Road shopping strip, which stretches north approximately 600 m from Camberwell Junction.
One of Melbourne’s leafy-inner suburbs, Camberwell is part of the City of Boorondara. While neighbouring Hawthorn developed steadily as a selective residential area of Melbourne in the second half of the 19th century, Camberwell retained its rural character until a regional railway network was established between 1882 and 1891 and distinctive small farms began to make way for housing estates. Neighbouring suburbs are Glen Iris, Burwood, Hawthorn.
Today its Federation-style housing contrasts sharply with the classic Victorian homes of Hawthorn and the art deco properties of neighbouring Kew. Modern Camberwell is building a reputation as a rival to the Melbourne CBD for its quality of restaurants and coffee shops and stress-free shopping. |
