Thornbury, Your Local Area

Thornbury is part of the City of Darebin which supports a diverse population of 131,000 in the mid-north of greater Melbourne. The municipality has a broad multicultural population base - including a significant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander element - whose interests are promoted by an active Ethnic Communities Council. Darebin is also blessed with 450ha of parkland, which will be increased when the greening of the former Northcote Tip is completed. Centrepiece in the garland of parks is Bundoora which unfolds in a series of passive and active recreational precincts beneath the highest point in Melbourne, the summit of Mt Cooper. The city’s park and reserve land also includes the Ray Brabham Gardens with their lake, rotunda and European-style ornamental plantings, Darebin Parklands, whose 33ha embrace wetlands, and a tower to spy on the waterfowl and animals which live in the park and distinctive Preston Cemetery which boasts the state’s largest mausoleum. The centre is located just off St Georges Road and very close to Thornbury Primary School and Thornbury Train Station. Surrounding suburbs include Brunswick East and Coburg.
